Last weekend was a very successful one for the Club with notable wins at both senior and under age level. Our senior team will compete in the Galway Senior Hurling Championship again next season having banished the spectre of relegation with a 2:21 to 3:16 victory over Kinvara. Cashel played the better hurling and were deserving winners but it was a close run thing. Cashel started the better and a Martin Cullinane goal saw them lead by four points midway through the half. However Kinvara fought back to lead as half time approached, but a late David O'Gorman goal saw Castlegar lead at the break 2:08 to 1:09. Cashel pushed on in the second half to lead by seven points at one stage and seemed to be cruising to a comfortable win. But Kinvara switched to route one tactics with county goalkeeper Colm Callinan launching huge puc outs in the direction of sub David Huban. The ploy worked and two goals saw them come right back into contention. But Cashel held their nerve to win by two points. Well done to all the players and to John McIntyre and his mentors, they were very unfortunate to find themselves in the relegation group in the first place, but having ended up there they produced the goods when necessary. Any lack of appetite for the struggle could have seen us go down, but now we move on to the shield competition and to senior hurling in 2015, whatever format that may take.
Our U10 team also did the Club proud last Saturday in the annual St. Mary's College Festival of Hurling. Cashel were the overall winners following victories over Carnmore, Rahoon and Moycullen, a semi final win over Salthill-Knocknacarra and a final victory over Liam Mellows. Well done to all the players, manager Tom Healy and his mentors. One hundred minutes of hurling is a lot to ask of young players and they deserve great credit for both the result and their conduct on the day. Hopefully this will encourage them all to stick with it and represent Castlegar in the championship in years to come.
Our U15 team faced Kilnadeema-Letrim this evening at home in their second A-Championship group game. The game was a very high scoring affair and ended in a draw, Castlegar 3:18 - Kilnadeema-Letrim 5:12. Last weeks postponed game against Clarinbridge will be played in the coming week, check our Facebook and Twitter pages for details. Our U21 team are back in action this week. On Sunday at noon in Duggan Park, they take on Ahascragh-Fohenagh in the second round of the A-Championship.Well done to James Smith who was with the Galway U14 team for the Connolly Cunniffe Tournament last weekend.After the success of our début effort last year the Club are running the Last Man Standing fundraiser once again starting next weekend October 5th and 6th. But this time we are doubling the prize money to €1000, while the ticket price is unchanged at €10. All you have to do is buy a ticket from one of the many members who are selling them around the parish, fill in your choice of team from the fixtures listed, along with your contact details and return it to the seller. As before the monies raised are ring fenced to fund coaching for boys and girls from the schools in the Club catchment area and to purchase training & playing equipment.
